The Boson Books Newsletter: Fall 2005

Hello booklovers around the world. We at Boson Books hope you have a wonderful fall. To help make autumn even better, we have some interesting new titles for you. We also have an interview with mystery novelist John Chabot.

Speaking of John...here he is

Q: Do you write only mysteries?

It depends upon the length. The novels I’ve written could be called mysteries in that the reader, I hope, doesn’t know who the bad guy is until the end. But the short stories seem to be a lot more varied. Sometimes you know the culprit, sometimes not, and at times I’m not even sure there is one. There even are times when he’s the one you’re rooting for. I think each story is very different from the others. I didn’t plan it that way. That’s just how they came out.

Q. What do you like best about writing fiction?

To me, the most interesting thing about a story, even a crime story, in not what happens, but to whom it happens. I love that feeling when a character, or a scene, or a feeling stops being just an invention and becomes real, at least for me.

Q. What about it do you like least?

That’s easy. Writing is a lot of work and takes up a lot of time. But then, if I wasn’t doing that, I might get into trouble and end up in one of my stories. God forbid.

Q. What do you try to achieve in your stories?

That’s a tough question. I suppose it depends on the story. As I said, each one is different and has its own needs. I like humor, if it fits. I want characters who are not superheroes, but more like the real people I know. I like the plot to now and then take unexpected turns. Mostly, I just want to write a story that’s fun to read, something I’d like to read myself. If I can do that, I’m happy.

Q. Thanks for taking a minute with us, John. Keep up the great work.

And now, speaking of some interesting new work…

Boson has just published “The Yoshinobu Mysteries: Volume II” by the impossibly hard-working John A. Broussard. Perhaps John’s secret is his residence: he lives in Hawaii. One thing we know isn’t a secret is John’s ability to produce compelling, highly readable mysteries. His latest volume features Kay Yoshinobu, who practices criminal law along with her husband Sidney Chu. Kay specializes in thoroughly investigating the lives of her clients. And truthfulness is not the most common virtue of Kay’s clients.

Take a moment to learn more about Kay Yoshinobu and a truly compelling cast of characters:

Finally: the e-book strikes back! The e-book continues to evolve. We’re pleased to pass along some exciting news in the e-book’s evolution: an e-book reader that makes use of the much-hyped e-ink technology. Fortunately, in this case, the technology lives up to the hype.
