The Boson Books Newsletter: Winter 2008

Hello booklovers! Boson Books looks forward to an exciting 2009, with new titles and important developments in the book industry. Here’s a glimpse of what the new year holds.

Our new nonfiction includes:

Armed Love by Elia Katz. First published in 1971, Armed Love is a classic examination of commune living, a phenomenon that marked an exceptionally tumultuous era in American political and cultural life. Katz’s study is humane, level-headed, and marked by Mr. Katz’s wonderfully observant eye. As Publishers Weekly noted, Armed Love is both “corrosively funny and serious, and reads with the verve and immediacy of a good novel.”

Into the Light by Sonia Handelman Meyer, a collection of compelling photographs of 1940’s New York City. The best collections of photographs create a vividly detailed world, and Ms. Meyer’s work brings back to life a complex, nuanced bygone era. Her work captures both the NYC that once was along with the NYC—that dynamic state of mind and place—that continues into the 21st century. Coming soon!

Our new fiction includes:

Barracuda: The Fighting Anthonys, Book 3 by Michael Aye. Mr. Aye’s latest historical novel continues the adventure established in the previous two books, The Reaper and HMS Seawolf. Set in the American civil war era, Barracuda tells the exciting tale of Admiral Lord Gilbert Anthony and his brother Lieutenant Gabriel Anthony as they track the ghost ship Barracuda. Rich with accurate historical detail and driven by a fast-paced narrative Barracuda is another demonstration of Mr. Aye’s evocative prose.

Stoney Beck by Jean Houghton-Beatty is a moving tale of deception, discovery, and new hope. The heroine, Jenny Robinson, has lost both of her parents and sets out for Stoney Beck in the Lakes region of England to uncover family secrets long suppressed. Stoney Beck adds new life to the historical romance novel with evocative prose and a powerful undertow of suspense.

Industry developments:

Amazon’s Kindle is a hit with readers around the world, and Boson—the first general, commercial publisher of e-books—is an active partner, offering numerous titles for the Kindle e-book reader. The Kindle delivers on the promise of the e-book with an easy of use—and ease upon the eyes, we hasten to add—that adds new pleasure to reading. A new version is being released this spring, according to a New York Times report.

Furthermore, Boson’s titles will, this year, appear in the Sony Reader format, thereby offering further choices for our readers.

Interestingly, these developments are occurring the larger context of what can fairly be called “chaos” in the book industry generally. The national (and international) economic storms have, of course, affected the book business. Larger houses face significant cutbacks in staffing and titles, and large booksellers—Barnes and Noble, for example—face significant challenges.

Despite these matters, Boson looks forward to 2009, and we invite you to take a closer look at our titles. Indeed, March 8-14 is Read and Ebook week, and we’ll offer specials for Mobipocket and Amazon kindle formats.
